Native aborigines inhabiting the Sydney area for at least 40,000 years referred to it as Warrane. The Australian coastline was frequently visited by European navigators around the 17th century. The east coast was first charted in 1770 by the well known explorer Captain James Cook.
The British later established a colony in this part of the world. The history of Australia began when The First Fleet, commissioned by Thomas Townshend Baron Sydney, set sail for Botany Bay on May 13, 1787.

Settling down, a ceremonial flag hoisting on the shore proclaimed it as the Colony of New South Wales on the 26th of January, 1788. This day is now celebrated as Australia Day. The convict agreement by the British government in 1788 was revoked in 1840 due to the pressure from citizens of Sydney, when England stopped transporting prisoners here.
In 1822, British and Irish convicts contributed to Sydney’s development by constructing roads, bridges, wharves and public buildings. The city was modernized with banks, markets, well-established streets and organized constabulary.
